GSR Ethics Group

GSR Ethics Group was formed in early 2007, with a remit to ensure the sharing of good practice and the consistent adoption of the principles in the GSR professional guidance: ethical assurance for social research in government across GSR member organisations. The agreed Terms of Reference are:

  1. Develop standard procedures containing practical advice on ethical scrutiny and practice that can be used by any department.
  2. Share good practice, learning and experience across government and act as a network which can signpost and respond to queries.
  3. Work towards a consistency of practice in terms of high-level ethical principles.
  4. Act as ‘ethical champions’ within departments; encouraging the consideration of ethical issues in all research work.
  5. Review GSR ethical guidance in the light of the other work of the group.

Members come from across central government departments and the devolved administrations.
