Social Research in the Cabinet Office

Aims of the Cabinet Office

The Cabinet Office's role is to support the government's delivery and reform programme. Its five key objectives are to:

• support the Prime Minister in leading the government
• support the government in transacting its business
• help deliver key public service priorities
• lead the reform programme for public services
• co-ordinate security, intelligence and civil contingencies matters to protect the UK against disruptive challenges

Social research in the Cabinet Office

Social researchers are located in two areas in the Cabinet Office:

1. National School of Government
2. Public Services Reform

National School of Government provides courses both targeted specifically at social researchers, and for other civil servants who engage with the evidence generated by social research. The courses for social researchers introduce participants to the issues of conducting social research in a government context and aim to improve the quality and utility of work undertaken. The courses have been developed by social researchers working in conjunction with National School of Government and draw on the experience of internal and external stakeholders (for example other specialists, policy makers and the external research community). The courses are delivered by social researchers with current or recent government experience.

Social researchers in PSR:

• commission and collate literature on measuring customer satisfaction. They also help to develop and promote principles of good customer feedback
• support departments as they develop their customer satisfaction programmes
• commission and manage surveys of senior civil servants and public service managers on their attitudes to reform
• commission and manage ad hoc surveys in support of the reform strategy.
