There is currently no centralised recruitment for the Government Social Research service. Instead, departments advertise specific individual vacancies as they arise. They are usually advertised on this website, the civil service recruitment gateway website and in the Guardian newspaper ('Society' section) published on Wednesdays.
Eligibility to apply for posts varies in the first instance between whether or not the department chooses to advertise posts
This is illustrated by the way we advertise GSR vacancies.
Where posts are advertised by open competition, most vacancies are open to European Economic Area Nationals and Commonwealth citizens, as well as UK citizens.
You also need a degree in a relevant subject. For most departments a good first degree in a social science subject is essential, but the definition of social science is usually broad. Some departments would also consider candidates for research and statistics vacancies who have a numerate degree such as mathematics, sciences and business studies. For most departments it is essential that a significant part of your degree (or work experience) has included training or experience in social research or statistics. A Masters degree is not essential, but it will be a real advantage. Competition for posts can be intense.
