The new competency framework for government social researchers is now available on the GSR website. It defines, for the first time, the range of skills and expertise needed for the many roles in the Government Social Research Service (GSR).
Social researchers across government can use the framework for development, appraisal, recruitment and promotion, and because it was developed over the last year, it carries the benefit of capturing the standards set by the Professional Skills for Government (PSG) initiative. It will continue to evolve over the coming year with the addition of a continuous professional development dimension.
Your department should start using the framework from April 2006, in preparation you should familiarise yourself with the framework during mid-year discussions this September/October and use it as a means of identifying any training needs. Take time to read the guidance at the start of the framework, and raise any queries with your line manager or Head of Profession.
