National studies programme 2006-07 consultation

The Audit Commission is asking local public bodies and national stakeholders for their views on the national studies programme 2006/07. The consultation paper contains a long list of possible ideas for studies that the Commission could address. Health studies will be the subject of a separate consultation with healthcare partners in the new year. Views on which topics are a priority are welcome as it is anticipated that fewer than half of the topics listed will finally go forward into the 2006/07 programme.

The Audit Commission's national studies programme aims to improve local public services through its independent authoritative analysis of national evidence and local practice. Studies focus on our four strategic objectives:

• to promote value for money, better financial management and improved financial reporting;
• to drive improvement in public services that people value, by challenging providers and commissioners from the perspective of service users and diverse communities;
• to promote good governance, greater accountability, better decision making and the proper conduct of public business; and
• to drive improvement in the use of performance information, data quality, data analysis, information management and the public accessibility of relevant information.

The consultation ends on 3 February 2006. A summary of consultation responses and the final national studies programme 2006/07 will be published in April 2006.
