Meeting needs for longitudinal data on the transitions of young people in Scotland - An options appraisal

The Scottish Executive wishes to commission an appraisal of the options for meeting the needs for longitudinal data on young people in Scotland, in particular in relation to their post-school transitions. The Education Department and the Enterprise, Transport and Lifelong Learning Department are responsible for policies that have an impact on young people through their school years and beyond into their post-school experiences of education, training and employment. It is important for the Departments to be able to evaluate the impact of these policies on the post-school transitions of young people. The approach of the Scottish Executive, and before it the Scottish Office, has been to fund the Scottish School Leavers’ Survey - a longitudinal study which gathers data on young people’s transitions from compulsory schooling (age 16) to age 23-24. The purpose of the options appraisal is to provide a cost-benefit analysis of options and recommendations on how to meet the needs of policy-makers and other stakeholders for longitudinal data on this population in future.

Potential tenderers should be aware that the successful contractor will not be permitted to tender for any subsequent study commissioned as a result of the options appraisal. It is intended that the options appraisal will be commissioned during June 2006 and completed by the end of September 2006.

Status: Not yet commissioned. Researchers who wish to be considered for inclusion on the tender list are invited to submit an Expression of Interest by Friday 26 May 2006, demonstrating their knowledge and experience in this area. The expression of interest form can be accessed at: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Research/Research/14478/8973
