Scotland’s ageing population: the evidence base

May 2007: the Analytical Services Division of the Scottish Executive’s Development Department has recently published in-house and external research which has been critical in informing the evidence base on Scotland’s ageing population. Scotland's population is ageing and this trend will continue over the next decades. The changing structure of our population has important economic, social and cultural implications for Scottish society.

• All our futures: planning for a Scotland with an ageing population: volume 3 (the evidence base) (PDF) - key in-house research which informed the evidence base for Scotland ageing population strategy. Draws on a variety of quantitative and qualitative research and statistical data to bring together some of the key evidence on older people today. It will help us to further develop our understanding of these implications and to provide a benchmark from which to monitor the Strategy for a Scotland with an Ageing Population.
• Age and experience: developing the strategy for a Scotland with an ageing population: consultation analysis: research findings - consultation analysis by George Street Research of the responses to the Scottish Executive's 'Age and experience: consultation on a strategy for a Scotland with an ageing population'. The consultation covered five key themes: contribution and opportunity; work; services for older people; health and well-being; and housing, transport and surroundings.
• A strategy for Scotland with an ageing population: qualitative research with the general public: research findings - to feed into the Strategy for a Scotland with an ageing population, the Executive commissioned Ipsos MORI to undertake qualitative research among the general public between 9-17 May 2006. The research focused on attitudes towards the ageing population; aspirations for old age and perceived barriers to fulfilling those aspirations; and perceptions of change needed to support an ageing population.
