15 May 2007 - Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) publish Doing justice: analysing ’risk and need’ assessments in youth justice practice

Methodology adopted an in-depth case study of a small semi-rural Local Authority in England (Haverset Local Authority), with one Youth Offending Team and a small youth Court sitting one day per week. Primary data comprised 80 semi-structured interviews with 29 young lawbreakers who were under sentence and 51 practitioners routinely adjudicating or working in youth justice. These included the entire YOT team, the full court bench, a small sample of solicitors and a selection of police officers dealing with young people in the area. Six months of ethnographic observations in the Haverset youth court supplemented the interview data. Documentary analysis of 36 YOT case files and official policy documents was also undertaken.

4 May 2007 - Home Office publish Adult offenders’ perceptions of their underlying problems: findings from the OASys self-assessment questionnaire (Findings 284) (PDF)

The publication summarises the responses of over 100,000 offenders in the OASys self-assessment questionnaire (SAQ), between January 2003 and May 2006.

Findings include:

Offenders were less likely to report problems than practitioners.
Offenders who claimed they had many problems were more likely to be female, younger and White, with a higher likelihood of reconviction.
Many offenders were more optimistic about their likelihood of reoffending than their OASys scores would predict, or they portrayed this optimism in the SAQ.
While females were more inclined to perceive themselves as having a large number of problems, particularly emotional well-being, they thought they were less likely to reoffend.
Of those offenders who thought they were very likely to reoffend, over half said that they had a problem with drugs and approximately a quarter referred to drugs when explaining their likelihood of further offending.
A SAQ was completed in 22% of the OASys assessments included in the research.
