Cambridge University careers events: 30 January and 7 February

The main event - The Works - is on 7 February 2008. The Works is designed to address themes of interest to students and graduates rather than specific employment areas and to give them ideas as to where work involving either specific skills, for example research or specific outcomes such as environmental advantage might be found. Quite what the themes of any given event will be do depend on what organisations can be persuaded to come but usually include environment and conservation; overseas development; public service (at students' request) and social policy; urban regeneration; working for charities; health and so forth. The format is an informal 'fair' and The Works is open all afternoon. Modest lunch and tea and coffee for attendees; about 1000 students from all years and disciplines. Usually busy and very 'buzzy'.

Last year our sole representative was busy all the afternoon and had queues of people wanting to talk to her. So this time we are really looking for at least two people to attend. It would be helpful if one were a Fast Streamer as this is a popular area for questions. GSRU will provide more detailed briefing and material for whoever attends.

Secondly, on 30 January...

A careers evening - VERY informal occasion - when the University ask a range of speakers working in a general field - in this case Social and Political Research - to talk about their work and to answer questions. In previous years they have had speakers (mix of) from an MP's Researcher, Think Tank Researcher, NatCen, public sector consultancy, Social Enterprise Coalition. It runs from 6.00 or 6.30 - to enable people to come after work. Ideal for someone who lives near Cambridge and/or went there.

Any one interested in helping at either of these events should contact Jonathan Webb in GSRU on 020 7270 5356, email jonathan.webb@hm-treasury.x.gsi.gov.
