Bulletin: June 2008

Welcome to this Government Social Research bulletin. The editorial policy of the bulletin is changing from this month. Following an internal review we have decided to focus the ‘Research News’ section of the bulletin (and the GSR website where news items are originally posted) exclusively on government research. Research outputs from other organisations are numerous and we no longer have the resources to monitor and quality-check the reports in the way we need to if they are to be referenced on a government website.

Please use the links below to navigate to sections of interest to you.

Professor Philip Cowley to join GSR

Coming to GSR from the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham, Professor Philip Cowley joins as the first ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) placement fellow in August. He will be based in the Government Social Research Unit in the Treasury until Spring 2009, developing mechanisms to improve routes for knowledge generated by the external research community to reach government.

His research interests are primarily in British politics, especially political parties, voting and Parliament. He has recently completed a project - Backbench dissent in the House of Commons - on the behaviour of MPs in the 2001-05 Parliament and is now researching the current Parliament. His other interests are issues to do with political engagement, especially the disconnection between politicians and public, as well as ideas for parliamentary reform imported from outside the UK.

Academy of Social Sciences

Head of GSR, Professor Paul Wiles, spoke at the Academy’s annual meeting in June. The Academy is composed of Individual Academicians and Learned Societies. Academicians are distinguished scholars and practitioners from academia and the public and private sectors. Most of the Learned Societies in the Social Sciences in the United Kingdom are represented within the Academy.

The Academy responds to Government and other consultations on behalf of the social science community, organises meetings about social science and seminars on topics that span social science disciplines, and sponsors a number of schemes that promote social science and enhance its value to society.
