6. Expected learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

formulate researchable problems
critically evaluate published research
articulate links between policy questions, research design and research methods
critically and selectively apply knowledge of research design and methods to their research questions
understand and apply a range of research methods and tools
understand how to carry out data collection foregrounding the importance of the research question in this process
carry out data analyses, both quantitative and qualitative, foregrounding the importance of the research question or model in this process
systematically review and evaluate published research and understand whether it contributes to evidence-based policy making
complete a 10,000 word report based on a substantive or methodological topic, which shows understanding of the above list of learning outcomes.
