What additional benefits are there to working in GSR?

As a GSR member you will be part of the UK Civil Service, which offers a range of benefits.

Salary

Government departments have their own pay and grading system, so salary scales vary. However the current starting salary range for Research Officers is £25,000 - £32,000 in London and £21,292 - £27,000 nationally. Salary details will always be specified in vacancy advertisements.

Pension

Your pension is a valuable part of your package. Your employing government organisation will make significant payments to provide your pension, in addition to your own contributions. All Civil Service pension schemes offer you more than just a pension, such as pensions for your dependants and life assurance cover while you are working. Visit the Civil Service Pensions website - it has a range of information about the schemes and you can read or download booklets and leaflets to find out more.

Leave

Annual leave entitlement normally starts at 25 days, rising to 30 days after 5-10 years (again, this varies by department). This entitlement is in addition to 10½ days of public holidays and privilege days taken at fixed times of the year.

Diversity

The Civil Service does all it can to promote diversity and equality. We know that we can all benefit from working alongside people with different backgrounds, experience and ideas. The Civil Service aims to improve delivery of services for everyone in society through achieving a truly diverse workforce at all levels, including the most senior. As with any Civil Service vacancies, GSR welcomes applications from all qualified individuals irrespective of their age, disability, gender, religion, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. There are also various support groups and networks to give you the chance to meet and talk to colleagues who face similar issues or share the same interests; and leadership devlopment opportunities for all.

Work/life balance

The Civil Service is committed to helping every employee find the right work/life balance by offering flexible working options.  Provided it does not affect the service we provide, employees can be offered a range of flexible working options to help them manage their commitments outside work. These can include:

There may also be opportunities to assist people in working from home one or more days a week - if it will help them manage commitments.
