Student Placements

This page tells you about undergraduate work experience opportunities in the Government Social Research service (GSR) and how to apply for them.

Details of all opportunities available in the government departments and devolved administrations of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland who employ social researchers are shown below.

These opportunities will give you an insight into the work of social researchers and their way of working in government. This type of experience is important when you come to make your long-term career decisions.

Please note that there is no formal cross-government work experience scheme organised centrally in GSR so you should only apply as instructed for each opportunity. Please do not send speculative CVs to the GSR careers email inbox: these will be disregarded.

Welsh Assembly Government

The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) can offer a variety of short work placement opportunities for social science undergraduates interested in careers in government social research. Placements are based in Cardiff and can be organised in any of the policy areas WAG have responsibility for, depending on what subject/policy area the student is interested in. If you would like to know more about these opportunities, please email: research.evaluation@wales.gsi.gov.uk.
